Historic Homes

As you walk through Old Town, on the brick sidewalks you will notice these dark oval metal plaques on houses, indicating that these particular properties are over 100 years old, have architectural integrity and are of historic interest.

The Historic Alexandria Foundation is an organization dedicated to the preservation of Alexandria’s architectural heritage. Fifty years ago, numbered oval plaques began being awarded to these houses that were shown on the historic chart, a survey published by the Alexandria City Planning Department.

Plaques are awarded today only after a detailed application process plus an inspection by an independent consulting historian. Currently, 680 buildings retain these distinctive plaques.
